I had 3 losses in a row. What should I do?
The key is not to panic. When you hit a failure streak, the worst thing you can do is get frustrated and frantically attempt to recover your losses.
Follow these steps to break the cycle:
1. Pause and reset. Even a short break can help clear your mind. Take at least 10 minutes to breathe, stretch and review your trading plan. If you’ve hit your loss limit, stop trading for the day.
2. Review each unsuccessful trade to understand what went wrong. Did you stick to your strategy? Was the trade too large? Did you use stop loss? Write down what happened in your trading journal to turn losses into valuable lessons.
3. Adjust and rebuild. Once you've calmed down and learned from your mistakes, come back with a revised plan. Reduce your trade amount until your confidence returns, and double-check your risk settings. Stick to your new rules and avoid making impulsive changes to your strategy.
Tips:
- Don’t chase losses. Never increase your trade amounts or abandon stop loss orders in the hope of "getting even.”
- Use strict risk limits. Set a maximum daily loss (e.g., 3% of your account). This keeps a bad day from turning into a disaster.
- Three losses in a row are a signal to pause and reflect. Learn from the experience and return with more awareness and structure.
Important:
Every trader experiences losing streaks – even the pros. It’s not the losses that define you, it’s how you recover from them.
